Senior Meetings
Your Senior College Packet is required to be submitted to your counselor prior to requesting a counselor letter of recommendation, or by the end of November. If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action, your deadline will be sooner than this, depending on individual college application due dates.
MAKE A TIMELINE OF ALL YOUR APPLICATION DUE DATES: Count back 2 weeks from your earliest application due date that requires a counselor letter of recommendation - that is the LAST day you may meet with your counselor for a letter of recommendation (add in additional time to account for holiday breaks! This is also the target date for you to have your application materials completed.
*** If you have a TA or health/civics period, book during that time! | For lunches, ONLY BOOK DURING YOUR OWN LUNCH; do not schedule during your 4th period class time unless prearranged.
COMPLETE AND COLLECT ALL REQUIRED ITEMS:
- College Tracking Spreadsheet
- Completed Resume
- Completed Reference Form
- Copy of one or more of your college essay drafts (optional)
- Any additional supplemental college material you would like feedback on (optional)
upload REQUIRED ITEMS TO FORMS at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled meeting

Teacher Letters of Recommendation
College Essay Guy Guide to Recommendation Letters
- Do I need a letter of recommendation?
- Do I need to ask a teacher of a specific subject for a recommendation?
- How many letters should I request?
- When should I ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation?
- What items do I need to give to my teacher recommender?
Do I need a letter of recommendation?
Colleges vary in whether they require teacher letters of recommendation or not. Always check their website directly for the current requirements.
Examples:
School which Do not accept any recommendation letters:
- Public state schools in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California DO NOT ACCEPT letters of recommendation.
- See: UW; UC Berkeley
- Including but not limited to: all UC schools, WSU, WWU, CWU, EWU, U of Idaho, U of Oregon, OSU, all CalState schools, etc.
One teacher letter* required
One teacher + ONE school counselor letter required:
-
Examples: Whitman; Cornell; WPI; Northeastern; Seattle U; CMU; etc.
TWO teacher letters* required:
TWO teachers + ONE school counselor letter required:
*Some colleges will also read a counselor letter of rec if submitted, even if it isn't required.
Do I need to ask a teacher of a specific subject for a recommendation?
Most colleges allow students to choose any teacher as their recommender, typically in a traditional core academic discipline (i.e. English, Science, Math, or History) or related to your intended major (e.g. Cornell, USC, Boston U, Stanford, UT-Austin, Harvard)
Some colleges specify which subjects teacher recommenders should come from, for example:
MIT: 1 STEM, 1 Humanities
Olin College: 1 Math/Science, 1 of student’s choice
BYU: 1 Math/Science/English from 11th or 12th grade
Duke: 2 teachers from core academic subjects from 10-12th grade
When requesting a letter of recommendation from a teacher, select someone who knows you well, can speak to your learning/performance in class, or teaches within your intended program of study.
How many letters should I request?
Many students will only need
one teacher recommendation letter; some will need two.
-
In late May/June of 11th grade, identify one teacher to ask to be your primary recommender.
-
You may request a second teacher recommendation only if you already know for sure it will be needed for one or more of your college applications. It's okay to ask a teacher in June to “be my second recommender if needed”, and essentially reserve that teacher’s recommendation only if needed for Fall of 12th grade.
Under no circumstances should a student request a 3rd teacher recommendation
More than 2 recommendations from an academic perspective is not considered beneficial nor is it typically permitted by colleges.
if your college allows additional letters of support, you must seek these from other adults such as your school counselor, internship supervisor, scouts troop leader, music or athletic instructor, or congregation leader.

AXS Common App Companion
As you fill in your Common App application, a good approach is to have the AXS Companion open on another device and move through each step of your application in a linear, step-by-step manner. For each section of Common App, there is a corresponding section with explanatory videos in the AXS Companion.

Collegewise Guide
Quick Tips by Section
COMMON APP (YOUR PROFILE) TAB
- Most questions can be answered by the tutorial video on each section, or the Right-hand tab “Help”
- Dual-Credit courses should be listed as part of your high school coursework and in the “Colleges and Universities” section.
- In the “colleges/Universities” section of the “Education” tab”, you will be asked to indicate number of colleges, then list your college information and how many credits you will earn. You will click the “Dual enrollment w/ high school” box. (You will not have earned a degree, so leave that part blank)
- College Courses taken in summer – list in “Colleges/Univ” section, the list course name & grade in “Additional Comments” section.
- HS Courses taken in summer – use the “Other Courses” section
MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES
- You should only report middle school courses that appear on a high school transcript. Otherwise, you should not report middle school courses.
- To report a middle school course, use the 'Other Courses' section. For 'School Name,' choose the name of the high school that lists the course on the transcript. You do not need to add the middle school name.
WHAT IF I HAVE FAILED OR RETAKEN A COURSE?
-
You should list the course(s) exactly as they appear on your transcript. Do not remove failed courses or consolidate retaken courses with failed courses.
COURSE & GRADES SECTION
- This is where you list grade 9-11 courses. It may not be required by your colleges (this will fill in as needed based on what colleges you’ve listed on your My Colleges tab.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS SECTION
-
This is for a variety of things, such as explanation of current year online course, drop in grades during a particular time, more thorough explanation of a long-term activity that can not be explained in activities section.
MY COLLEGES TAB TIPS (INCLUDING RECOMMENDERS)
- Add Colleges via the “College Search” tab, then view in My Colleges tab
- FERPA Release – click/accept this (need to do only once to apply to all colleges)
- Invite Recommenders – here you list your teacher’s and counselor’s contact info. Counselors cannot upload any info into your file unless you list them as your counselor. Counselors need to be added only once, but teachers need to be added once and then click to “assign” the teacher to each college app.

High School Coursework
- You will report all A-G courses, including courses in addition to those used to satisfy subject requirements. Do not include Non A-G courses such as Health or Physical Education.
- Dual enrollment – reporting college courses taken during high school. You do not report dual enrollment courses (college courses taken during high school) within this High School Coursework section. After you’ve completed your Colleges Attended, report any college courses you’ve taken on the College Coursework screen. Then, visit the A-G Matching screen after completing College Coursework to report how these may satisfy your A-G requirements, if applicable.
ADDING A SUMMER GRADE
Grade levels for summer courses should be
reported as the grade you were going into
after that summer.
For example, if you took a summer class between 9th and 10th grade, the summer grade level should be set to 10th grade. Each summer you have attended should be entered individually by grade level. Once you’ve added a summer grade level, follow the same steps outlined above to "Add a course"

The Main Application Form
Your application will begin with a main profile form that you complete with information about yourself as well as your education (school, classes and grades). Some applications can be used for multiple schools (eg. CommonApp, Coalition, TexasApply). You will need to create a username/password before being allowed to complete the application and view it prior to submitting it. Independent app schools will have their own application for their one campus.
Keep an eye out for check boxes on the application that will allow you to be considered for financial aid, honors, or scholarships. Some schools might have that within their application while others will have a separate application, so read carefully!
Application Fee
Fee Waivers:
Please see your counselor if you believe you qualify for a fee waiver either because you are on free/reduced priced lunch or face other financial concerns. Some colleges accept waivers.
Final Review
We recommend that you do a final review/preview of your entire application before hitting the “submit” button. In CommonApp you will be able to see when any additional documents (eg. transcripts, rec letters) are submitted.
After your Application is Received
Many colleges will contact you via the email you provided in your application, prompting you to create an account in their college’s school portal. This is the way most colleges will communicate with you regarding updates to missing documents, reminders for scholarship deadlines, and eventually your actual admissions decision. Make sure to bookmark each portal and save your login information, and add in each college’s general address into your email provider’s “safe list”.
Personal Statements/Essays
Personal Statement/Essay: Many colleges require one common personal statement
Additional writing prompts (including entire essays or short responses) may be required by some colleges. This information can be found on a college’s admissions website, within the “College Information” section of CommonApp, or listed as additional essays required in Independent apps. Hint: College essays tend to take more time than students expect – plan these out carefully and give yourself plenty of time for review/editing.
Essay writing instruction occurs embedded within your 12th grade (early September) English classes!

Resumes & Activities List
Activity List/Extracurriculars/Honors/Awards: You will use your Reference Form & Resume to develop your Activities List. Be strategic in your descriptions of your involvements and what you choose to include (if there is a limit)
What is a Resume?
-
Written during your resume workshop in May/June of your Junior Year
-
Brief, bulleted information on one page.
-
Highlights your broad experience and skills gained through your high school education, activities, and work experiences.
-
REQUIRED to graduate from high school
What is The Reference Form?
-
Written in May/June of your Junior Year before you request a letter of recommendation from a teacher.
-
Detailed, thoughtful reflections and information on key highlights of your high school experience.
-
A tool for you to convey depth and context to your recommenders!
-
REQUIRED for a letter of recommendation!
What is the Activities List?
-
Written in your SENIOR YEAR as part of your applications.
-
Think of this as a hybrid between the above two items. You will use both your resume and reference form to complete this application component.
-
REQUIRED by most colleges within the college application itself.
Transcripts/ Courses & Grades / SRAR
Official High School Transcript:
Some schools require an official high school transcript to be sent directly by mail from Tesla STEM, or electronically via your school counselor’s email. Please double check each college’s admission website to determine if and when an official transcript must be submitted.
EXAMPLES:
Some colleges will also have you list out your entire transcript’s courses, sometimes within the “Courses & Grades” section of the CommonApp, through their Independent app, or via a private “Self-Reported Academic Record” (SRAR) portal. This enables a college to easily reweight your GPA or reprioritize specific coursework based on that college’s standards.
FOR EXAMPLE, UC colleges require that you self-report your courses and grades and will not accept official transcripts during the application period.

Application Deadlines

Approximate Dates for Typical Deadlines
Early | October 15- Nov 15 |
Regular | Nov 15- Feb 15 |
Rolling | ~August 1- whenever seats are filled |
Note on Early vs. Regular Deadlines:
Many colleges, particularly public colleges, do not solicit early applications and will have only one deadline (e.g. UW, UC’s). For those that do offer early application options, as you consider which deadline is best for you, ask yourself the following questions:
- Will you be prepared to submit all application materials by the early deadline (including recommender letters)?
- Is it advantageous for a college to see your first semester senior year grades when reviewing your application?
- Is there an advantage for you in applying early? (e.g. admissions advantage, scholarship opportunity, early decision may mean not applying to other colleges?) Or to not apply early? (e.g. having time to consider options, ability to show first semester grades, later SAT/ACT scores, or other Senior activities)
- Do you understand the commitment of applying Early? Early Decision vs. Early Action?
